Hui Topu 2019
Whanau, Kura, & Pariha gathered for the reignited Hui Topu over Easter responding to the call of the Ngati Porou rohe & Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti Pariha.
Over 100 gathered over the course of the main day, Saturday 20 April, for whanau activities at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti with games, sports, obstacle challenges, & Easter egg hunts for kohungahunga & rangatahi. This number swelled as more whanau arrived in the evening as the focus shifted to waiata, himene, haka, & whakangahau.
For over 3 hours, 8 pariha, rohe, & whanau performed including Te Aute & Hukarere Kareti. Performances showed the amazing depth, beauty, & breadth of our collective songbook & gave a glimpse of the skill of the masterful composers in our whakapapa, in Te Tairawhiti & in the Hahi.
Between performances, several kaumatua shared their experiences of Hui Topu held in decades past. Rob Ruha introducing the Beach whanau spoke of a desire to raise their children & mokopuna experiencing Hui Topu.
“Enei i haramai ki nga Hui Topu i te wa e ora ana. Whakaarohia ratau na runga i te karanga kua timata ano tenei kaupapa kia whakahokia mai nga whakatipuranga ki roto i tenei kaupapa,” he said.
“I pakeke mai ratau i roto i te Hui Topu, ana, pirangi kia pakeke ano hoki nga tamariki mokopuna ki roto i te Hui Topu.”
Hearkening to the choir contests of old, choral items were judged with Hikurangi Pāriha taking top honours, winning the newly christened trophy, “Te Purapura Hua Rau”.
An Easter Sunday karakia capped off an awesome weekend with baptisms and confirmations, and an excellent hakari at Hinemaurea Marae.
Nga mihi nui ki te rohe o Ngati Porou, ki te Pariha o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti na ratau te kaupapa i whakaara ano, i waha hoki. The next Hui Topu will be held 11 April, Saturday of Easter, 2020, in Uawa.

A PRAYER FOR THE NEW BISHOP
Almighty and eternal God, you have called us through your Son to be one with your Church around the world: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their callings and ministry they may be instruments of your love, and give to your servant Waitohiariki, who will soon be a Bishop, the gift of your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
