Ko Hikurangi te maunga
Ko Waiapu te awa
Ko Ngāti Porou te iwi
The Most Reverend Dr Don Tamihere
Te Pīhopa o Te Tairāwhiti is the spiritual leader and shepherd of Te Hui Amorangi ki Te Tairāwhiti. The Bishop proclaims Te Rongopai, safeguards Te Whakapono, and provides pastoral oversight to clergy, pariha, and the wider people of God. He presides at worship and the sacraments and leads the mission and ministry of the Church throughout the Hui Amorangi.
The Most Reverend Donald Steven Tamihere was ordained and installed as the second Bishop of Te Hui Amorangi ki Te Tairāwhiti on 11 March 2017 at Porourangi Marae, Waiomatatini in the Waiapu Valley.
Archbishop Don also serves as Te Pīhopa Mātāmua and Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. He was installed at Manutuke Marae, Gisborne on 28 April 2018, succeeding Archbishop Brown Turei.
Before becoming Bishop, Archbishop Don served as Community Priest at Holy Trinity Church in Gisborne, Kaihautu Tāpapa ki Te Tairāwhiti and the Centre for Biblical Studies, and Tumuaki of Te Rau Theological College.
Archbishop Don encourages the Church to remember its Mihinare identity and the faith of our tipuna, who chose to build the Church among their people. His vision for Te Hui Amorangi is expressed in the kaupapa “Ka Tipu, Ka Hua” — setting the foundations for a flourishing Church rooted in the love of God, the peace of Christ, and the joy of the Holy Spirit.
